If you are already in Singapore and need more time, start with the pass you actually hold. A Short-Term Visit Pass, Student's Pass, Dependant's Pass and work pass are different permissions, handled by different routes. You do not simply "convert" a tourist stay into any status you want.

The safe question is practical: what is my current pass expiry, what am I trying to do next, and which authority handles that route? For a short visitor, that is usually ICA for a Visit Pass extension, ICA for study, and MOM through an employer for work. Do not overstay while waiting for a plan to become clear.

Extending a Short-Term Visit Pass

ICA says STVP extension applications must be submitted online, not by walk-in, and can be made when the pass has 14 days or less remaining. ICA assesses each request on its facts, and may ask for a local sponsor or extra documents depending on nationality, family links or medical reasons. Fees, processing time and payment rules are subject to change, so verify the current instructions on ica.gov.sg before relying on any summary.

Singapore-market VFTF, SG Arrival Card and extension searches

A search for "VFTF Singapore extension" or "extend 96-hour visa Singapore" should not be routed to a paid Form 14A flow. ICA says extension of stay under VFTF is strictly not allowed, so a traveller who entered under VFTF should plan to depart within the allowed transit window rather than look for a VFTF renewal.

SG Arrival Card is also separate. ICA says SGAC is free and is not a visa; travellers transiting or transferring without immigration clearance do not submit it. If the traveller has already entered Singapore and holds a Short-Term Visit Pass or e-Pass, the relevant question is the ICA Visit Pass validity and extension route. Form 14A is a pre-travel entry-visa application, not a way to extend a Visit Pass after arrival.

Moving from visit to study

A Student's Pass route starts with admission to an approved full-time course in Singapore. ICA notes that some short courses can be attended on a Short-Term Visit Pass only if they fit the official criteria, such as being completed within the pass validity or 30 days, whichever is shorter, and not involving certain practical occupational training. If the course does not fit those limits, check the Student's Pass route before starting.

When studies affect the current stay

A traveller who already holds a Student's Pass should start with the school and ICA when the pass is close to expiry or the course is changing. This is separate from Form 14A, the SG Arrival Card and a visitor's request to extend a Short-Term Visit Pass.

If a student is still visiting Singapore while a new study route is being arranged, check the current Visit Pass expiry separately and follow ICA's extension instructions before it expires. Approval of a Student's Pass application or renewal is handled through the institution and ICA, not through our short-stay entry-visa service.

Moving from visit to work

MOM says foreigners who intend to work in Singapore must hold a valid work pass before they start work. For Employment Pass, S Pass and most Work Permit routes, the employer or appointed employment agent applies; this is not a self-service visitor extension. MOM's Employment Pass guidance also says candidates do not need to be in Singapore when the employer applies, and employers should only bring candidates in when the pass is approved.

What Student's Pass and DP holders can do

A Student's Pass is for study, not a general work visa. MOM allows some Student's Pass holders to work only if they meet specific conditions, such as being a full-time student at a listed institution, working during vacation, or staying within school-term limits. Exchange students and training-attachment students have separate restrictions, and working without the right permission is an offence.

A Dependant's Pass is also not open permission to work. MOM says DP holders who want to work need the right work pass, such as EP, S Pass or DP-Work Permit through an employer, or a Letter of Consent route for eligible business owners. ICA-issued LTVP/LTVP+ holders follow separate MOM rules for LOC, PLOC or Work Permit routes. Verify the current rule on mom.gov.sg before accepting work.

How to avoid a bad-status gap

Put the expiry date first. If you need a few more days as a visitor, check the ICA extension route before the STVP expires. If you are starting school, confirm whether your course needs a Student's Pass. If you have a job offer, ask the employer which MOM pass they will apply for and whether you should wait outside Singapore until approval.

VisatoSingapore can help with visit-visa and Form 14A preparation, but we do not replace ICA or MOM, and we do not file work-pass applications. Rules, fees and timings change; verify extension rules on ica.gov.sg and pass/work rules on mom.gov.sg before making travel, study or employment decisions.
